Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Free Throw Shooting Influence on End Result

"... In what manner free throw shooting have an influence on the end result of games ? ..."
Let's take to be true, for example, that both teams had converted all of their free throws, or the losing team convert all of its free throws and the winning team convert the same number of free throws.
How all these data is performed statistically to the end ?
Here are some numbers from the archives of the eBA Basketball Statistics Creative Analysis System:
1.- The average number of free throws attempted in a game is about 25 per game.
2.- The shooting average is about 75% efficiency.
3.- That implies as a possibility that a 1% upward would make an actual deviation in FTM once every 4 games (see 1.-: teams shoot 25 FTA per game), translated in only one point every four games.
4.- Teams win by one point 5% of the total of games played.
5.- That 1% upward in FT% would tell us that 25% of these 1-point wins would instead go to overtime.
6.- And finally, to go on with discussion, that 1% FT% upward give us a win on 5% * 25% * 50% = 0.6% of the team's games, or 0.5 current games: that's means one additional win every two seasons.

What about the free throws analysis and the weighted standard deviation ?
Performing this calculation we must not mistake precision with accuracy. Nonparametric elements like percentiles make no hypothesis that is taken for granted about the shape of the distribution: they are more cautious measures and much less likely to return errors at the the highest degrees.
If you're searching leaders in a category, basketball free throws for example, I recommend you to always use nonparametric measures with a common plan with parametric measure, merely to be sure there are no outliers into your results.
The weighted standard deviation doesn't succeed in seizing the unfairness between two players with the same rates at free throws percentage ( as in all the other categories ) in different quantities of playing time.
Same rate is as if: that rate and no more. What it would succeed in catching is a significant change between the width of the distributions, having an effect upon the standard scores. The differences between player rates would be involved, but not if they have the same rate.
When analyzing free throws numbers ( or any other range ) with measures that aren't well fully apprehended, I give preference to study at the numbers from multiple angles. In this case which you propose at your question, I would perform the computations using
1. Percentiles
2. Standard deviation
3. Weighted Standard deviation by minutes
4. Weighted Standard deviation by square root (minutes per game)
and examine and note the similarities or differences of them. There shouldn't be much significant change, but it would be holding the attention if there was.

Eleven Rings: The Soul of Success by Phil Jackson and Hugh Delehanty MJ vs. KB? Here it is from the man who would know best. "... Michael was more charismatic and gregarious than Kobe. He loved hanging out with his teammates and security guards, playing cards, smoking cigars, and joking around, Kobe is different. He was reserved as a teenager, in part because he was younger than the other players and hadn't developed strong social skills in college. |
When Kobe first joined the Lakers, he avoided fraternizing with his teammates. But his inclination to keep to himself shifted as he grew older. Increasingly, Kobe put more energy into getting to know the other players, especially when the team was on the road.
Michael was a tougher, more intimidating defender. He could break through virtually any screen and shut down almost any player with his intense, laser-focused style of defense," said Jackson, who coached Jordan to six championships and Bryant to five.
Kobe has learned a lot from studying Michael's tricks, and we often used him as our secret weapon on defense when we needed to turn the direction of a game. In general, Kobe tends to rely more heavily on his flexibility and craftiness, but he takes a lot of gambles on defense and sometimes pays the price. ......

' About the Possessions in Basketball '
by Matias Barmat
"... There are many factors to analyze a possession, or rather, how to categorize a possession in basketball. ..."
"... In the case that it wasn't successful, we must see if the failed possession results in another possession for the same team.
There are statisticians who consider that a continuation of possession (for example, after a missed field goal that hits the rim and a member of the attacking team gets the offensive rebound) are in fact two consecutive possessions, the first of which did not materialize. ..."
"... We have other considerations: ..."

"... 1) If the final possession occurs before the 8, 16 or 24 seconds (it means, to divide the possession in thirds. If NCAA, before 12, 24 or 35 seconds);
2) Whether it was the product of a static attack, a transition or a counter-attack. To be considered as a static attack, the ten players on the court must be all in the same half; ..."
"... 3) Where it ended. We can divide the field into sections, but if we dopn't have a shooting chart, it would be more appropriate to consider four categories:
- In the vicinity of the rim. This includes lay-ups, dunks, or any proximity field goal action inside the no-charge semicircle;
- Two-point shots: if the shot was from inside or outside the paint zone. If it was outside, broadly to the right or left of it viewed from the side of the attacking team (the bowl should be considered);
- Three-point shots, from five locations (in the corners, in the lane or in diagonal to it);
- Any fault action (with or without free throws). ..."
"... However, we must take into account the amount of possessions for each team in a game (it's not the same 16 field goals in the paint on 40 possessions rather than of 37). In that sense, the game pace has a fundamental
role. ..." Read more ...

Basketball Statistician's Digest:
April 2013 eBA sketball Statistics Case Study Conclusion

About a Basketball Disqualifying Foul and Points Scored Tracking Case Study
" ... The player A4, in the act of shooting a 3 pointer, he releases the ball and the player B6 punches him with closed hand in his face, the ref whistles and simultaneously sounds the game clock buzzer to indicates the end of the game and the ball goes into the basket, the ref ratify the basket and disqualifies B6, informing about all the events to the game officials.
The question is how many additional free throws the player A4 will shot, one or two free throws ?
What is the proper ruling and the correct INDIVIDUAL or COLLECTIVE statistical registration according to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System including the type of the registration ( type of turnover; forced, unforced, individual or collective turnover, good or bad foul; close, long, disputed or undisputed rebound; assist made, potential, missed or double assist; etc. ) ... ?"
Conclusion:
eBA System Statistics Fundamentals:
A free throw made (FTM) is credited to a player any time a FTA by that player results in the throw being counted or results in an awarded score of one point.
Basketball Statistics Philosophy:
A player should not be charged for a shot from the field influenced by the illegal actions of himself, or any teammates or opponents; in the latter case, unless the shot results in a FGM.
Commentary:
According to the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System when we have a situation of any foul continued by a goal we are speaking about an additional free throw, that's means, the player victim of the flagrant foul will throw a free throw and the game is over ( or goes into an eventual over time ); in this example the player made three points and a possible additional point more.
eBA Basketball Statistical Tracking:
• A4, a field goal made for three points + a received foul + a free throw attempt.
• B6, a Disqualifying foul made.
There is no registering of a turnover , because there is no another possession in this case.
This Case Study was presented as every 15th. day of each month, on April 15th, 2013 in our eBA Portal: were sent 643 answers, 87 partial answers and 499 totally correct, that's means including all the options, registrations and qualifications.

Sunday's Reflexions on Basketball Statistics:
About the Player's Scoring Possessions and Positions in Basketball Statistics

A resumed thought with reference to that "not specified percentage" in each field about which we are speaking related to 'player's scoring possessions' formulas: referred to assists I understand they must be counted and credited based on the length of the shots, as done at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System.
Long shots must be credited with a 25% to the player serving the assist, meanwhile short shots, layups or shots within two meters +/- of the basket, in a relative manner easy shots, must be credited with a 50%.
Finally medium range shots would have the credit of a 63% for the shooter and only the 37% for the player serving the assist, quantification which may be a proper average for assist in general.
Therefore, the individual floor % is just a player's scoring possessions divided by his total possessions. This statistic take into consideration all areas of a player's offensive contribution, with the possible omission of his offensive rebounds, which are counted not in a forthright manner in the total possession formula.
On many occasions, field goal percentages and free throw percentages are referred as measures of a player's scoring efficiency. For guards, assist to turnover ratios are frequently referred. Individual floor % summarize all this into one number having a purpose. Thoughts ?

And talking about positions, let's talk about the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System research to establish a correlation between the statistical category 'points-in-the-paint' and 'winning games' in basketball.
Surely, you keep listening game analysts talk about how certain teams protect the paint better than others or how another team has a weak inside presence.
Is it acceptable to say that your team have to be tops offensively and defensively to be considered a championship aspirant.
Close shots are the highest FG% shots so it is important, and 3pt shooting is the next best type shot.
Being tops offensively and defensively helped a lot of champions, but maybe "inside points" differential would be better measure for teams in general than the two parts individually, as your team could be above average but not spectacular on offense and above average on defense in addition.
Therefore, in an ideal manner your team would need inside/outside attack combo and as strong as possible differentials on each.

Latest World Basketball News:
Basketball Player Jason Collins Reveals He's Gay
An act of personal courage, making history and creating a giant reaction in the iron-clad world of professional sports. One of their own, jason collins,a power house player in the nba, a veteran of the court, today told the world he is gay. A revelation that makes him the first active player to come out, speak up, and take a stand.
So what will happen next? Abc's dan harris starts us off. Reporter: All those worn-out stereotypes about gay men?
Jason collins utterly demolishes them. He's a 7-foot, 255-pound, trash-talking bruiser, who has played on six teams over twelve years in the nba, making it to the playoffs nine times. I pride myself on setting tough picks.
You know, going out there and being physical. Reporter: Collins made history in "sports illustrated" with these 12 words -- "i'm 34-year-old nba center. I'm black.
And I'm gay. " Jackie robinson what he was to integration, and billy jean king has been to women's rights and now jason collins for gay rights, I think this is not just big sports news this is big news in our country. Reporter: Collins has been hiding his sexuality for years.
Quote, when I was younger, i dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way -- I kept telling myself the sky was red, but i always knew it was blue.
Hgs one small secret gesture of solidarity with the lgbt, wearing the unusually high number 98, a reference to another watershed moment, 1998, the year a young gay man, named matthew shepherd was kidnapped and murdered in wiig. Collins said he knew he had to come out after his roommate told him he marched in bostonas gay pride parade. He felt jealous and ashamed.
I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to take a stand and say, me too. Reporter: Today, reaction from around the league swift and mostly supportive with collins twin brother jarron, who's straight, tweeting - - very proud of you.
Reporter: And kobe bryant tweeting -- don't suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others. He's always been a great guy. He's always been a great teammate.
He's no different than anybody else. The guy is happy, whatever he does, that's cool with me. Late today we heard president obama called collins to express his support.
He said for years he had trouble sleeping because he was keeping this secret. The day afterly told his story, he says he slept like a baby. And this june he will be marching in the gay pride parade in boston.

The Concept of Main Pass in Basketball

' The concept of Main Pass ' by Matias Barmat
Lea este Artículo en Español
"... In basketball, every last pass before a field goal made (or foul play plus at least one free throw made) is counted as an assist.
In the NBA and NCAA, in addition to the normal assist situation, every field goal attempt which subsequently results in an offensive rebound plus a field goal made, counts also as an assist, because under those two paradigms ...
... every last complete ball trajectory between two teammates uninterrupted by opposing players must be considered as such. ..."

"... For example. Team A loses by one with 2.5 seconds remaining and no timeouts available. Whereas the last play of Team B was a field goal made (which caused the advancement in the score), A is forced to restore from its own end line.
A5 sends a hail mary pass that crosses three quarter court (the game clock didn't run as it's the last minute of the period; the time begins to run when the inbounds pass receiver makes contact with the ball), A2 (being blocked by B1) in jump effort taps the ball (it means, slaps it with the palm of his hand) and A3 with almost no time to react catches it and shoots to the hoop. It's in, and Team A wins. ...... ..."
"... This is a typical case of a double assist, as in ice hockey, but there are also cases where the assist is not necessarily the last pass of the possession.
We should take the spectacularity of a pass into account if and only if it's the main thing in a play: therefore, we're willing to talk about the concept of main pass. ...... ..." Read more ...

Basketball Statistics Referred Concepts:
About the Fastbreak Points Per 48 Minutes and the Four Factors

"... Does the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fastbreak points game by game and current season average ?
May be the actual basketball game is allowing quick players more access to the lane because of a more rigorous and frequent handchecking calls ?
May be that scoring and FG shots and possessions are down ? ..."
Certainly, the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System tracks team fast-break points game by game and current season average. Some numbers about our total season data:
• Officials are currently calling the games nearer, that means more non-shooting fouls. So, teams are receiving added time per possession ascribable to the shot clock getting reset more frequently.
• Scoring and Field Goals shots and possessions are going down and average duration of possession in game clock time is raising: therefore putting all together we can conclude that the pace has decelerated a little.
• Using our possessions formula - see eBA Encyclopedia - and team data from our archives, the average duration of possession reveal us a possession use in a slower pace: moved from 15.83 seconds to 15.88 seconds.
• And finally, fast-break frequency and points made from stayed the same, personal fouls raises 0.57%, turnovers moves lower 0.6%, steals moves lower 4.6%, blocked shots moves lower 3.4%, assists moves lower 3.2%, total rebounds moves lower 2.2%, shooting percentages are raising but field goal attempts moves lower 0.3% and 3 points attempts raises 1.5%.

In this topic we can find a help in understanding the Dean Oliver's Four Factors.
Essentially, the four factors are the building blocks to the efficiency formula.
Efficiency data gives you an idea of the quality of a team’s offense or defense, but the four factors tell you why a team is good or bad when they have or don’t have the ball.
Here’s a breakdown of how each statistic on this concept is calculated…
Effective field goal percentage is like regular field goal percentage except that it gives 50% more credit for made three-pointers.
eFG% = (.5*3FGM + FGM) / FGA
Turnover percentage is a pace-independent measure of ball security.
TO% = TO / Possessions
Offensive rebounding percentage is a measure of the possible rebounds that are gathered by the offense.
OR% = OR / (OR + DRopp)

Keep in mind that rebounding percentage is computed from box score data which does not contain team rebounds. Therefore, the figures shown here may differ slightly from calculations made on the rebounding totals provided by a team.
Finally, free throw rate captures a team’s ability to score from the line.
FTRateoff = FTM / FGA
FTRatedef = FTA / FGA
Defensive FTRate uses FTA in the numerator since the defense has little control on the percentage of free throw attempts made by the opposition.
The four factors concept is based on the research from Dean Oliver, author of the book and eBook Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis, and you can read Dean’s more detailed explanation of the four factors in the exposition by Prof. Roberto Azar from eBA-Stats about "Basketball Formulas Revision" in eBA ONLINE CLINICS....."
