Statistician's Digest: The Pace Factor and the Defensive Efficiency

( Last Friday conclusion message >
Is really the 'pace' the best factor to evaluate the cheerful compliance of a team to run ? I think it better bespeaks which teams, ascribable to endowment or strategy, force turnovers, rebound defensively well, and drop out a good opponent shooting percentage.

Possessions per game is a estimate for pace not processed or subjected to analysis.
Unsatisfactory offensive rebounding teams will look quicker than they in actual fact are, as will good defensive rebounding teams: due to the fact that offensive rebounds for one or the other team result in longer possessions, which entails a smaller number of possessions per 40 or 48 minutes.
A high FG% by one or the other team also changes downward offensive rebounds and therefore exaggerates possessions per minute.

Now, are there statistics efficaciously measuring team defense/offense and the pace factor: is right to state that high pace teams normally have bad defenses ?

Briefly to continue the question at the eBA Clinics: looking at the eBA Basketball Euroleague Games Archives. we established the quickest 28 teams throughout 10 years history and only 5 were under average on defensive efficiency compared to league at that time. So, speaking about top teams, fast pace doesn't at all times go with lacking defensive efficiency.

Statistician's Digest: Which team controls the game's pace ?

Which team controls the pace of the game ? For instance, if Team A (90.6 poss/g) and Team B (96.7 poss/g) played, which team would control the pace ? As might be expected it would be somewhere in the middle (93.7 poss/g) or could one team give direction to the pace involving only main features ? By the way, which team has had the advantage of controlling the pace... the drudgery team or the up-tempo team? Can a team to use pace as a strategic advantage ?

What is the importance of determining which team controls pace: Does it matter ?
Somebody can prove that a team actually gain an advantage by controlling pace ?
What says the work of the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis to determine whether it's true to determine that a team's ability to control pace could be important ?

About this topic of who controls tempo, it seems to me that the real question is: for whom is it more important to limit fast break points ? All teams obviously want to reduce them, but for whom is it most important ?

This discussion always leads to the question whether "controlling the tempo" is anything different from being able to successfully run one's sets and being able to keep the other team from being able to successfully run their sets. There, I think, two sides of the question:

1) Can teams gain a significant edge by forcing a given tempo. Can you can build a team to play well at a certain pace (fast/slow), and then force your opponents to play at that pace?

2) Are there teams that do particularly good jobs at controlling the tempo based on in game situation? It's obviously better to play slow when you are ahead and fast when you are behind (all other things being equal). Do certain teams do this significantly better than others?
(to be continued next Sunday)

Books Review: December 2008 eBA Best Seller

BILL SELF: At Home in the Phog
BILL SELF: At Home in the Phog
By: Bill Self with John Rohde

The 2007-2008 Kansas Jayhawks capped off one of the program's most storied seasons by winning its fifth national championship, and
first in 20 years. The Jayhawks success in 2007-2008 has been credited to total team effort and the inspiring leadership of head
coach Bill Self.
During his relatively short head coaching career, Self has established himself as one of college basketball's best by leading Oral Roberts to new frontiers, guiding Tulsa to its best season in school history, turning Illinois into a Big Ten powerhouse and now taking Kansas from a perennially great program to the best in the nation.

In Bill Self's first authorized book: BILL SELF: At Home in the Phog, Self and those who know him best offer an inside look at his
journey into becoming one of the game's most respected and most sought-after coaches. Self explains how he is living a dream - not
only is he a head coach, but he was selected to be the steward of what James Naismith and Phog Allen created. He describes the
excitement of reaching the pinnacle - leading the Jayhawks to a national title.
He gives minute-by-minute details of the contest that sent KU to the national title game. Self has achieved his dream of becoming a head coach. That much is evident. Even though he never dreamed of being the head coach at the University of Kansas, he did aspire to lead a college basketball team to greatness, which is exactly what he is doing. Self's journey proves that even though dreams may change, they can come true.

About the Author In the storied history of Kansas basketball, no coach has a higher career winning percentage at the school than Bill Self. In 2008, in his first trip to the Final Four, Self claimed the national title. He now boasts a 142-32 (.816) record in five years at Kansas and a 349-137 (.718) mark in 15 seasons as a Division I coach.

Self has been to 10 straight NCAA tournaments and advanced to the Elite Eight five times in that span, while directing three different
programs. His Kansas teams have won four straight Big 12 regular-season titles and three straight Big 12 Tournament crowns.
In the decade leading up to the national championship, Self has finished first eight times in three different leagues.
The other two seasons, his teams finished as conference runner-up. A former player (1981-1985) and assistant coach (1986-1993) at Oklahoma State, Self was head coach at Oral Roberts (1993-1997), Tulsa (1997-2000) and Illinois (2000-2003) before arriving at Kansas in April 2003. Self and wife Cindy have a daughter, Lauren, and son, Tyler.

Statistician's Digest: Are all the Game Situations Equivalent ?

Have all game situations the same quantity, value, or measure ? Is the quality to score a basket in the beginning of the 3rd. quarter the same as the quality to score a basket in overtime ?

Do game analysts think that there are situations in the game in which a special situation of the game could have an effect upon player production, as closing minutes of close games and playoff games ?

Not all game situations are registered by us with the same quantity, value, or measure. There are teams that use a plus/minus system that is weighted by both time of the game and how close the game is in score.

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System works having some weight to time and situation of a score which would be of interest to our coaches.
How coaches manage the replacement of his players with fouls (at every level of the game) and time outs in the closing minutes are an example which is discussed in the this board "Statistics & Statisticians" > Specific Game Situations Analysis.

Basketball Unforgettable Legends: Mirza Delibašić

Mirza Delibašić (January 9, 1954 – December 8, 2001) was a Bosnian basketball player. He was a born in Tuzla, located in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the former Yugoslavia.

Mirza Delibašić "Kindje" led his club KK Bosna Sarajevo to the Euroleague Championship in 1979. After leaving KK Bosna, Delibašić went to Spain where he along with Juan Corbalán, Wayne Brabender, Fernando Martín Espina, Dražen Petrović, and Arvydas Sabonis, is considered to be one of the best players ever to play for the "royal club" Real Madrid.

Mirza Delibašić, the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina

En route to a place among the European greatest players, Mirza Delibašić has won everything there was to win with Yugoslavia including Olympic gold in 1980, European gold three times, World Championship gold in 1978, plus many titles in European club competitions.

In addition to having played together for their national team, Mirza Delibašić and Dražen Dalipagić have also played together for Real Madrid. Their performance in a 1981 Euroleague game vs. KK Cibona in Zagreb is only one of the many highlights of their careers.

Mirza Delibašić scored 33 and Dalipagić 30 points. The game appropriately finished with a two-on-one fastbreak with Delibašić making a behind-the-back fake pass to Dalipagić and passing by a defender for a two-handed dunk at the buzzer. Cibona fans put aside their team loss and showed their appreciation for Bosnian stars` performances with standing ovations at the end of the game.

In August 1983 He suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage and had to permanently retire from the sport he loved. He lived in Sarajevo throughout the 1992-1996 siege of the city. His final years were marked by persistent health problems due to his heavy drinking, which led to his death on December 8, 2001 in Sarajevo at the age of 47. Several thousand people attended his funeral in Sarajevo and KK Bosna renamed its arena in his honor.

In 2000, Mirza Delibašić was selected the sportsman of the 20th century in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A memorial basketball tournament is held every year in the Dvorana Mirza Delibašić. In 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame.

Statistician's Digest: Additional Comments about the Prouty Rating

The Prouty rating is a simple, yet effective, method of rating players which is based on averaging four areas: 'Offensive Efficiency', 'Total Offense', 'Possessions' and 'Win Rating'.
The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System relates this rating but does not applies it.

The various individual parts of the Prouty rating, you can read the formula in my post here: Basketball Statistical Formulas: The Prouty Rating, are based on a per minute basis and if you study the formula in the eBA Basketball Statistics Register Clinic, you'll see that there are four main sections. The Offensive Efficiency ( how many points you score per shot ), Points Per Minute ( how many points you score or help others score per minute ), Possessions Per Minute ( how many possessions you gain or lose your team per minute ) and Win Effect ( how responsible you are to your team's win percentage, based on minutes per game ).

Statistician's Digest: Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher

From Dan Rosenbaum NBA Blog
Download source here: 'Using statistics in basketball: the bar is higher ' By Dan T. Rosenbaum

"... Academic research, however, is pretty much on the side of statistics. Whether diagnosing patients or evaluating job candidates, human beings vastly overestimate their ability to make judgments, research shows. Numbers and analysis almost always make people better. ..."

"... The real question is whether the benefits of more data (often collected and analyzed in a more objective manner) outweighs the costs of a simplified model that necessarily ignores some aspects of reality. ..."

"... There's a sense in which basketball stats are much more related to economics than baseball stats are, which I always found a bit boring although incredibly accurate and powerful as a game predictor. Baseball is mostly about a small number of repetitive hand/eye coordination tasks, while basketball involves constant maximizing interaction between optimizing actors on the court. ..."

Statistician's Digest: Matchup Probabilities ~ Applicability & Formula

Raymond Cheong designed a computer ranking system (CRS) - see it at
www bme.jhu.edu/ - to predict the outcome of a hypothetical matchup between two basketball teams. The CRS relies on the observation that average score margin is highly correlated to the ability to win, but that average score margin can be adjusted for strength of schedule and random variations in day-to-day ability.

The CRS gives the expected score difference in a hypothetical matchup, and assuming Gaussian variation in day-to-day ability, gives a closed formula for the probability one team will defeat another. This system could be easily adjusted for other sports, but is particularly suited for NCAA Division I men’s basketball because of the large number of games played and the finely graded scores.
The two-thirds winning record of home teams is often cited as evidence that a home court advantage exists. However, the HCA controlled for differences in home and away team abilities is zero. This is partially accounted for by the trend that strong teams invite weak teams in the first half of the season to warm up for conference play.

On the other hand, the Home Court Advantage calculated from paired home-away games is 3-4 points, suggesting the HCA is real. Raymond Cheong currently do not have a satisfying explanation for the discrepancies between these analyses.
On balance, this evidence neither confirms nor denies that the HCA exists, but at minimum that if an HCA is included in a CRS the way it is calculated must be carefully evaluated - see www bme.jhu.edu/ -.

eBA Stats Group Marks 10 Years on the Web

Our First Year on the Web...
Ten years ago this evening, on 24 December 1998, 20:00 GMT, I pressed a really scary big button in an old 386 Computer and the eBA-Stats.com website went online for the first time. This site was the first site of the actual eBA Stats Group and from a start of hits numbered in the thousands, the site now gets almost 10 million hits a year...

The second birthday...
During 1999, the eBA-stats.com web site, which has been built as a Basketball in general and Statistics in particular labor of love, took its first steps onto the World Wide Web with the aunch of the forums, the clinics and the directories sections. ......

Our third candle...
It’s weird and unworldly to imagine the Web when we started this site. Yahoo started about 1994. Google appears just with us. Nobody worried about PageRank back then, but we were quite pleased to be listed from the first days in all the Internet Directories. Netscape 1.0 was released in December 1994, and Internet Explorer first appeared in 1995......

The fourth celebration...
The site boasted a number of online-only features: a basketball store, a forum where basketball people could post questions and answers and debate about basketball statistics analysis, and a link for readers to comment on case studies and send feedback to the editor.......

During the following years on the Web...
Though our original web page at geocities and xoom ( http://www.geocities.com/allstats/index.html ) - with the "famous" bouncing basketball... - are probably lost to the winds of time, here's a version of our page from the first years... sorry about the design !

Thanks to the Internet Archive and reliving one’s formative years, here's what the site looked like in eBA Stats 2002 and eBA Stats 2004 as well ! ......

Four years ago...

While the history of eBA-Stats is a well-covered topic throughout the site, the impact of the network age, which coincidentally began around the same time our analysis system was released, even today, year 2008, it's difficult to measure, but also something to reflect upon and celebrate in tandem with eBA's birthday: the eBA Stats Group was born !

The eBA-Stats.com® Group - Portal in eBA-Stats.com ~ Forums in eBAforums.com ~ Encyclopedia in eBAwords.com ~ Clinics in eBAclinics.com ~ Blogs in eBAblogs.com & eBA Store -
begins to become a primary source of information and services for basketball coaches at the game statistical analysis area. In these years of professional life, the eBA-Stats.com® Group became the quickest and modern road to that information

The candle number 8...
The eBA-Stats.com® site started as a one-site-10 pages labor of love, has grown beyond all expectations: today the eBA Stats Group is comprised by 5 sites and more than 15.000 pages (and still counting...) !

It is still a labour of love, and its popularity due to YOUR SUPPORT means that each month approximately four million pages are viewed !
Therefore we needed to migrate ( second time in one year...! ) to a new, best and exclusive VPS server, including a dedicated IP, which assured us a 100% uptime for the last years !

Nowadays...
Ten years later, I am taking a few moments for a deep breath and a little reflection: eBA-Stats.com® Group is one of the largest non-commercial & bilingual basketball statistics analysis group websites in the world...!

To close anyway this celebration, thanks to Yahoo,
we invite you to fun little Flash retrospective,
where Yahoo revisits 100 memorable icons and events from the
last 10 years of the web
... Enjoy !

Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

eBA-Stats.com® Group wishes to everybody,
our publishers, editors and registered members,
our friends coaches participants in the courses and clinics,
our advertisers and sponsors,
our readers and thousands of daily guests,
our families, colleagues and personal friends...

( clicking here you can read it in all the languages spoken in our basketball statisticians community .... )

A Happy Birthday, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

May the season bring you joy and good cheer!

Onward ! ...

Our first ten years were about finding a voice, an audience, and a cause worth fighting for.
Please join us for what comes next.

We are together today, see you tomorrow !

...by the way, ten years ago also, on September 27 1998, Google, with three employees - Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Craig Silverstein, began life in a friend's garage...

Basketball News: Steps Forward for the FIBA Central Bureau

FIBA International Ranking
The Central Bureau of FIBA, the highest executive body of the International Basketball Federation, met at their fifth meeting of the term 2006-2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, being impressed by the quality of the presentations from China, Italy and Spain, the three candidate countries to host the FIBA World 2014.

Then the most important decisions of the meeting:

1. First FIBA World Club Championships for 2010:
The Central Bureau agreed that the first World Club Championship will be played in October, 2010 and will be an annual event with the best eight teams in the world.

Talks on this event continue and the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Nanjing have already expressed interest in playing host for this event along with other cities.

The Championship will be open for the five champions of the FIBA Area Tournaments (5 teams) and the runners-up of FIBA Europe and FIBA Americas. The last club will be invited by the hosting city (and approved by FIBA).

The 1st FIBA World Club Championship will be played in five days on the second week of October, 2010 and for a total of ten games. The winner will receive one million dollars.

2. 2009 WADA Code:
The new 2009 WADA Code (doping) was approved. FIBA Central Bureau also expressed concern at the practice and legality of the new requirements and are waiting to speak to WADA and other international federations.

FIBA Central Bureau also approved the start of testing outside competitions from 2009 onwards.

3. 2010 World Championship:
The FIBA Central Bureau received detailed reports of the World 2010 in Turkey, including a commitment of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the government together with the Federation of Turkey. The Central Bureau expressed concern about the feasibility of making the World Cup 2010 in Turkey, taking into account the aspects required to host an event as important as this.

The steps taken in the coming months will be crucial and will be monitored by FIBA.

4. Mexican Federation:
The FIBA Central Bureau acknowledged the Mexican Basketball Sports Association, chaired by Dr. Modesto Robledo Robledo, as the National Basketball Federation in Mexico.

The next meeting of the FIBA Central Bureau will be held on 23 and May 24 in Geneva, Switzerland where the host of the 2014 FIBA World Championshiop will be named.

Statistician's Digest: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistical Registration

... When a player is fouled in the act of shooting while going to the basket, so we have a "shooting foul" :
a.- when the player is fouled as soon as he ends the dribble; or
b.- when the player had to at least make some attempt at throwing the ball towards his basket ? ...

Shooting Foul
Photograph: Basketball Notes by Alex

The rule-books describe it as the "habitual motion" that precedes a shot. About this are we speaking ? But I don't think that it's only to "make" a shooting movement, but to really attempt at throwing the ball, in order to be called a "shooting foul".

Trying to give an example about that "habitual motion" that precedes a shot, which is certainly possible for a shot attempt to begin as soon as the player picks up his dribble: the most common example is a layup. In this instance, the player intends to shoot well before the dribble is picked up, but by rule, it is only a shooting foul if the dribble has ended.

There another two posts about this topic to read: When a Shooting Foul is called ? - Statistics Registration y Shooting Foul - Statistical Registration.

A New Feature at Basketball-Statistics.com: Charting Defense

From Basketball-statistics Blog
Download source here: 'A New Feature at Basketball-Statistics.com: Charting Defense' by Jon Nichols

"... As I’ve mentioned before, there are many issues with the current stats out there intended to measure individual defense (including mine). The best way to really analyze a player is to watch the games and record your observations. ..."

"... Kobe Bryant picked up at midcourt by Ron Artest, he moves right off Gasol’s screen, room for Bryant in the lane as he goes up for the throw down! Artest gives up the bucket to Kobe, but is that really fair? What about Yao, should he have hedged the screen? Maybe Artest could have fought through or around it and stayed in front of Bryant. What about after that — shouldn’t Carl Landry have stepped in to contest Bryant’s shot or take a charge? Or was McGrady in position to step in? This is the problem with the defensive metrics available today. They mean relatively little when looking at individual plays, where every defender has a job to do, and one failure leads to the failure of the entire defense. ..."

"... Six categories will be charted: Pick and/or Roll Coverage, One-on-one, Help Defense, Turnover Attempts, Rebounds, and Leaving Open/Getting Back. Here’s a breakdown: ..."

Statistician's Digest: How Many Possessions a Player Uses ?

"... I was thinking about the fact that big men score more efficiently, and use less possessions to get their statistics, and guards averages three times as many assists as them, thus making the big men more valuable. The question is if there is at the eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System a statistic that tracks how many possessions an offensive player uses to obtain his numbers. ..."

The eBA Basketball Statistics Analysis System want to know how "efficient" a player is with the amount of possessions they use and, therefore, applies the Usage Rate ( see the eBA Basketball Encyclopedia ): UR measures the number of possessions a player consumes per 40 minutes, and is calculated

40 * (Lg Pace / Tm Pace) * ((FGA + 0.44*FTA + 0.33*AST + TO) / Min)

"Pace" is an estimate of the number of possessions per 48 minutes by a team, and is found by

48 * ((Tm Poss + Opp Poss) / (2*(Tm MP / 5)))

Also, looking at any stat on a per-minute basis (for example, pts/40 minutes) is a better measurement of who's doing well, being a good idea to avoid the use of per-game stats completely in the modern basketball game analysis.
